BARIATRIC SURGERY
Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch
In cases of extreme obesity, sometimes the most powerful procedure is needed – BPD/DS achieves the highest weight loss.
A demanding procedure that combines sleeve gastrectomy with extensive small intestine rerouting. For patients where other procedures are not sufficient.
The Procedure
The most complex bariatric procedure. Combines sleeve gastrectomy with extensive rerouting of the small intestine. Strongest malabsorptive component. Highest weight loss.
Why this procedure
Results
The highest achievable weight loss of all bariatric procedures – sustained and stable long-term.
Excellent long-term results for type 2 diabetes with remission rates exceeding 90%.
BPD/DS is the procedure of choice for the most severe obesity, when other procedures do not achieve the desired results.
Eligibility
“BPD/DS is the most effective procedure for extreme obesity. The decision to proceed is always made on a highly individual basis.”Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhard Prager
Frequently Asked Questions
BPD/DS stands for Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch. It is the most complex bariatric procedure and combines a sleeve gastrectomy with an extensive rerouting of the small intestine. The strong malabsorptive component leads to the highest weight loss of all procedures.
Unlike the gastric bypass or SADI-S, BPD/DS has the most extensive intestinal rerouting and thus the strongest malabsorptive effect. By preserving the pylorus (gastric valve), the risk of dumping syndrome is lower. However, follow-up care is more intensive.
BPD/DS requires consistent lifelong supplementation with vitamins, minerals, and protein. Regular blood tests are essential to detect deficiencies early. Follow-up care is more intensive than with other bariatric procedures.
