GENERAL SURGERY
Laparoscopic Diaphragmatic Hernia Repair
Heartburn and reflux can severely impact quality of life – a laparoscopic repair provides lasting relief.
The procedure is minimally invasive and permanently addresses the cause of reflux.
The Procedure
Laparoscopic repair of diaphragmatic hernias (hiatal hernias). The stomach is repositioned from the chest cavity and the diaphragmatic crura are reconstructed. In cases of reflux disease, a fundoplication is additionally performed to reinforce the closure mechanism.
Why This Procedure
Results
Permanent reflux control through anatomical reconstruction and reinforcement of the closure mechanism.
Additional stability for large defects.
For large paraesophageal hernias, the mesh-reinforced technique provides additional stability and reduces the risk of recurrence.
Eligibility
“Heartburn is treatable. When medication is not enough, we address the cause surgically.”Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhard Prager
Frequently Asked Questions
A hiatal hernia (diaphragmatic hernia) occurs when parts of the stomach slide through the diaphragmatic opening into the chest cavity. This can lead to heartburn, reflux, and difficulty swallowing.
Surgery is recommended when medication does not adequately control reflux, for large hernias with a risk of stomach incarceration, or when quality of life remains significantly impaired despite conservative therapy.
Most patients can leave the hospital after 2-3 days. Light activities are possible after 1-2 weeks. An adapted diet is recommended during the first few weeks.
